The ankh appears in Egyptian art and ceremonial objects from the Early Dynastic period onward, c. 3100 BCE. In temple reliefs and tomb paintings, it is held by deities toward the nose or lips — a gesture connected to breath and the continuation of life. In jewelry made for royal women, the same symbol appeared in a smaller, more intimate form.
